Should we have our band perform our first dance song live or let their DJ play the original recording?

Is it better to play the well-known recorded version of your first dance song, or should you opt to have Boston Premier perform their own live rendition? Every season, a few of our couples struggle with this option. Ultimately, it's a personal choice that you will have to decide, but we thought we might help you make this decision by presenting a few points.

Deciding on having the band play it live:

Boston Premier strives to produce fully polished arrangements that couples will be thrilled to dance to. When it comes to providing the ideal musical background for your first dance, you shouldn't expect any less. After all, we're a talented team of musicians that will work diligently to ensure that every aspect of your wedding celebration is perfect. Preparing a song for your first dance is certainly part of that. We ask our clients to allow us ample time (6 - 8 weeks) to arrange and rehearse your selected first dance song. On your special day, when it is time for the two of you to share that magical moment on the dance floor, the band will be fully prepared to perform your first dance beautifully.

Deciding to have our DJ play your first dance:

The vast majority (98%) of our couples request that our DJ play the original recorded version of their first dance. Many couples express that they want to relive that special moment whenever they hear their song, whether in the car or an elevator.

Depending on the musical selection, it's sometimes better to allow our DJ to play your first dance if the track is beyond our instrumental capabilities. For example, a few years ago, we were asked to play "SOON" from the rock band "Yes." Truthfully, the band's rendition wouldn't sound very close to the actual recording because our instrumentation won't cover all of the processed layerings that were added to the recording. Instead of performing a thinned-out version of the song, the couple allowed us to play the track, which was the better option.

Lastly, for couples planning a choreographed first dance, we highly recommend allowing our DJ to play that same recording that you are practicing with. We want you to have a flawless execution that is timed perfectly to the track you are used to dancing to. In this scenario, having our DJ play your special song will ensure the best outcome as you dazzle everyone on the dance floor.

We hope some of these points will help you make the right decision for your special moment. No matter your preference, Boston Premier is a talented wedding band that will execute your details flawlessly.
